Adult Counsellor
I am really pleased to have joined OSARCC as an online counsellor working to support women affected by sexual violence. I strongly believe that women should be able to access a safe, specialist service, free at the point of delivery. I am a person-centred counsellor and have worked with survivors within the rape crisis movement for a number of years since graduating with a degree in Person Centred Counselling and Psychotherapy. I have used professional development courses to develop an understanding of trauma and the myths and prejudice that surrounding society’s response to sexual violence. It is great to see how empowering this insight can be when shared with a survivor. Every woman is different and every story is different, but gaining an understanding of how our brain and body react to trauma or how others might undermine us with society’s assumptions about what it means to be a survivor of sexual violence, can be really liberating for survivors. I always learn something for myself when working with each woman and although the work is hard, it is inspiring and rewarding and sometimes unexpectedly joyful. I am looking forward to learning and growing in my role at OSARCC.
